[SAMPLE] Praying Ẓuhr after arriving late to work
The question, as it was putMy job does not allow a break at the time of Ẓuhr. I can usually pray around 3pm. Is this acceptable, or am I sinning each day?
A prayer performed within its time window is performed on time, even if not at the beginning of it. Ẓuhr’s window extends until the beginning of ʿAṣr, so a prayer at 3pm — where ʿAṣr has not yet entered — is a valid, on-time Ẓuhr.
You are not sinning.
Two things are worth adding. The first is that praying early in the window is better where possible, and it is worth asking whether a short break is genuinely unavailable or simply unrequested. Many employers accommodate this readily when asked plainly.
The second is that the window closing matters. If your break sometimes falls after ʿAṣr has entered, that prayer is delayed past its time, which is a different matter. Knowing the ʿAṣr time for each season, rather than assuming, is the practical safeguard.
